Making paper monsters10/27/2022 ![]() ![]() I penned African Americans of Chattanooga: A History of Unsung Heroes, which earned the 2014 East Tennessee Historical Preservation Award, and I earned the 2014 SCBWI Letter of Merit for an unpublished multicultural novel. I am a former special education teacher, and am currently a full-time children's writer, book blogger and freelance editor. To make their own monsters, young readers/artists need only gather the tools from the simple tool list at the front of the book (patterned paper, glue, and their own little fingers to work with) - and then it’s off to the races. MAKING PAPER MONSTERS FULLThey’re going somewhere, which is evident as they yell: “Wait for me” and “Don’t be late.” Although readers don’t know where they’re going, readers with an imagination and a love for “open-ended play” will quickly compose a funny story full of monster shenanigans. From hand-made paper platforms to cotton clouds and cardboard pipes, everything looks like it came right out of. I always start on the bottom of my sculptures and work my way up. The worlds of Paper Monsters are as amazing to look at as they are to play through. Also, you will need a lot of torn paper strips (roughly 2.5 -3 inches x 5-6 inches. First, children open the thick and sturdy pages of the book to see bright, colorful and delightfully scrambled illustrations of monsters on a mission. To paper mache my monsters, I use Elmer's Paper Mache Art Paste, but any paper mache paste will do (yes even homemade paste).
